It is an annual encounter in Spanish and English for popular theater artists, researchers, students, teachers and enthusiasts of Caribbean culture and perform.
Every year we convene to discuss ideas, share our work, and learn about and highlight artists from the region. Through these exchanges, we seek to build a deeper and more comprehensive understanding of our own practice and the many ties that bind each of us to the cultural, political and social struggles of the Caribbean peoples as a whole. Furthermore, we strive to build a digital archive of theatrical groups, artists, conversations, articles and interviews that capture the essence of this historical moment in Caribbean cultural history since our inception in 2020 until the present.
In 2023, we will meet in person only in Santiago de Cuba at Studio Macuba during their Popular Theater Workshop, as part of the culmination of the five-day Festival del Fuego, the largest annual multidisciplinary festival in the region for the past 40 years. We will produce a short documentary video about the experience, told from the standpoint of four Open Channels members from diverse backgrounds. We hope to finish the video, publish it online, and discuss it at an international public panel event that we will livestream from New Orleans, Louisiana in Fall 2023. Please stay tuned!
